Independent Studies

What is the Independent Study Program?

The Independent Study Program (ISP) is part of the Multiple Pathways Program. ISP provides opportunities for students ages 17-21 to earn credit toward graduation in a homework based, self-paced, individualized environment.

This homework-based curriculum offers students an opportunity to improve learning skills in a distraction free environment.

Students follow the same Standards Based Curriculum found in all Omaha Public Schools. School rules, too, are the same as those in the other seven high schools.

ISP strives to meet the unique needs of certain students who are typically older and have earned fewer credits than their peers in traditional high school. Many ISP students are emancipated, live on their own, have significant family obligations, and work 30 or more hours a week.

Typically, students are enrolled in one class and must complete the credit in that class before being enrolled in a second class. Students choose the time of day they will attend.

The 5-2-2 Plan is expected to earn credit in a timely manner, which means that students attend class 5 days a week for 2 hours a day and complete 2 hours of homework each night.  Students using this plan can earn one credit in about three weeks.  When credit is earned in one subject, students are then enrolled in another class. Credit is not earned until all work has been completed satisfactorily.

ISP partners closely with the other Multiple Pathway Programs: Accelere, AdultHigh School, Gateway to College, and the UNO/OPS Program.

Typically, an ISP student completes two credits in Independent Study and moves on to one of the other Multiple Pathway Programs in order to more rapidly earn credit.

Independent Studies Program Staff includes:

David Andus : Math

Brad Bolton: Social Studies

Sharon Hartley : Science

Jeremy Stanosheck: English

Program Director

Hello and welcome to the Independent Study Program webpage. As the director for the Independent Studies Program with the Omaha Public Schools, I would like to welcome you to one of the Multiple Pathways programs. Here at Independent Studies we currently serve students ages 17-21 in an effort to help them earn credits toward receiving their high school diploma.

Depending on the number of credits needed to complete requirements, the process includes earning two credits with us and then moving on to one of our other programs for completion. Those programs include Accelere, Gateway to College, and UNO OPS. An additional option is Adult High School. Courses taken at Adult High School are in conjunction with the classes you are currently taking at your primary building.

Please note, if you are in need of 10 credits or less, you are welcome to stay with Independent Studies Program until you have met your requirements. We are excited that you have chosen to earn credits with us and our hope is that you will join us on the stage at the completion of your journey with the Multiple Pathways Programs. If you have any questions or need more information please stop by the office or call 531-299-9394.

Yours in Education,

Jacqueline Washington
